Patchett filters present-day Nashville through a nostalgic lens. The article starts as she recalls her love for pork terminated by reading Charlotte's Web, and ends decades later with a barbecue taste-test in her kitchen. Despite gentrification -- old haunts get swallowed up, and Acme Farm Supply and The Grand Ole Opry move out of downtown -- a native girl can still find the country in the city. Unfortunately, the rambling piece drops too many names with too little description; Patchett's memories aren't universal enough to ring true with the reader.
