Australia is said to be a nation built on the backs of horses, yet with a population of 300,000 in the wild, the government saw fit to initiate a mass cull. Images of the large-scale slaughter caused a public uproar, and now activists look toward gentler solutions to horse overpopulation. Ni meets with Jan Carter, a widowed harpist who used her life savings to turn her farm into a sanctuary, putting the horses through an expensive two-month adoption program. Environmentalists may be skeptical about her impact on the enormous horse population, but Carter has clearly found her calling.
